Translink has confirmed the introduction of additional train services to accommodate spectators travelling to the International North West 200 motorcycling event in Portrush on Saturday, 10th May — the busiest day of the festival.

In a move aimed at easing congestion and improving accessibility, Translink will operate an extra morning train from Belfast Grand Central Station to Portrush, departing at 7.40am.

Two additional evening services will also run from Portrush back to Belfast, departing at 6.25pm and 9.30pm respectively.

David Cowan, Director of Commercial Operations at Translink, said the enhancements were designed to give passengers more flexibility and help manage the high volume of attendees expected.

“To give our passengers more choice, and to manage capacity, we are providing extra six-carriage trains on Saturday 10th May, the busiest day for travel to the NW 200,” Mr Cowan explained. “These trains will operate in addition to our regular timetable.”

In addition to rail services, Translink is also promoting coach and bus options for travel to the event. The 218 Goldliner express service departs hourly from Belfast Laganside Buscentre to Coleraine. From there, passengers can transfer to the frequent 140 Triangle Service, which continues on to Portstewart and Portrush.

“Taking public transport to Portrush for the NW 200 will remove the stress of driving, avoiding road closures and finding somewhere to park,” Mr Cowan added.

Eventgoers are strongly advised to plan ahead, particularly in light of scheduled station closures and route diversions.

Dhu Varren Station will be closed for periods on Wednesday 7th, Thursday 8th, and Saturday 10th May. During the event, the 140 bus service will operate via alternative routes due to road closures in the area.

Passengers can find full travel details, timetables, and updates on the Translink website at www.translink.co.uk, via the Journey Planner tool, or by contacting the Translink Contact Centre on 02890 666630.

The North West 200 is one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic sporting events, drawing tens of thousands of fans each year. With demand for transport set to be high, early planning is strongly encouraged.
