RNLI lifeguards have officially resumed full-time duties along 11 of Northern Ireland’s most popular beaches across the Causeway Coast and County Down, offering vital lifesaving services from 10am to 6pm daily until Sunday, 31 August.
The lifeguard patrols, which mark the start of the peak summer season, aim to provide a safe environment for beachgoers as thousands flock to the coast for holidays and day trips.
The beaches under full-time RNLI surveillance this summer include:
Causeway Coast: Benone, Downhill, Castlerock, Portstewart Strand, Portrush West, Portrush East, Whiterocks, and Ballycastle
County Down: Tyrella, Murlough, and Cranfield
The RNLI lifeguards, both seasoned and new recruits, have undergone a month-long programme of induction and pre-season training. This included comprehensive instruction in casualty care, lifesaving techniques, fitness assessments, and watercraft operation—ensuring teams are fully prepared to handle emergency situations.
In 2024 alone, RNLI lifeguards in Northern Ireland saved five lives, responded to over 204 incidents, and assisted more than 235 people, underscoring their crucial role in beach safety.
Michael Thompson, RNLI Regional Lifeguard Lead, said:
“We’re thrilled to have our full team of RNLI lifeguards back on duty at all 11 beaches this summer. Our lifeguards are fully trained in all aspects of beach safety so anyone visiting the beach with any queries should always approach a lifeguard, who will be more than willing to help or offer expert advice.”
The RNLI’s seasonal lifeguard programme is delivered in partnership with Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, and the National Trust, who work collaboratively to ensure the coast is safe and welcoming for all.
Councillor Oliver McMullan, Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, shared his support for the initiative:
“As Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens I very much welcome the full time return of beach lifeguards here in our Council area. Our beaches remain a really valuable outdoor asset enjoyed by our residents and visitors. As a previous RNLI volunteer in my younger years, I know the RNLI is invaluable to help ensure everyone has a safe visit to Causeway Coast and Glens. I extend my heartfelt thanks for the important lifesaving service they provide.”
RNLI beach safety advice for summer 2025
To stay safe while enjoying the beach this summer, the RNLI advises:
Choose lifeguarded beaches and always swim between the red and yellow flags
Supervise children at all times, both on the sand and in the water
