Football and books came together in Ballymena this week as players from Ballymena United Football Club swapped the pitch for the classroom to help inspire a love of reading among local pupils.
The club joined pupils and staff at Dunclug Primary School on Thursday (March 5) to celebrate World Book Day 2026, turning the usual school routine into an energetic mix of football, storytelling and lively questions from curious young fans.
First team players Donal Rocks and Brad Wade were joined by fitness coach Glenn Wilkinson and club chairman Chris Selwood for the visit, meeting with Primary Six and Seven classes to show how the determination and passion seen on the football pitch can also drive success in learning.

The day began with an unusual twist on the traditional pre-match press conference. Instead of journalists, it was the pupils asking the questions.
The Ballymena United players and staff faced a grilling from the children on a wide range of topics, including their toughest opponents, favourite childhood memories, healthy lifestyles and even which fictional characters they admired most.
But the pupils did not remain in the interviewer’s chair for long. The roles were soon reversed, with the children stepping into the spotlight as they were asked about their own favourite books and what makes reading enjoyable for them.
Once the press conference wrapped up, the focus shifted back to football. Pupils took part in a series of fun drills and games alongside the visiting players, giving them the chance to combine learning with physical activity.

The principal and staff at Dunclug Primary School praised the club’s involvement and the impact the visit had on the children.
“Dunclug Primary School would like to thank the staff and players at Ballymena United FC for joining us today and inspiring our children to learn, be active and develop important life skills,” principal Alastair Beacom said.
“Our thanks for the generous gifts of a signed shirt, footballs and range of reading books to celebrate World Book Day. We look forward to seeing the players again at Ballymena Showgrounds on Saturday and cheering them on against Portadown FC.”
The visit highlighted how sport can play a powerful role beyond competition — helping young people build confidence, curiosity and a lifelong connection with reading.
