The upcoming Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Week (2–6 February) is providing an opportunity to spotlight the achievements of a rising local talent, as former CAFRE Equine Apprentice Jack Johnson celebrates a remarkable journey from classroom to racetrack success.

Staff at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) have praised Jack’s determination, work ethic and commitment to transforming a lifelong passion for horse racing into a flourishing career within the equine industry.

Originally from Belfast, Jack completed his apprenticeship training while working with the highly respected Stuart Crawford Racing in Larne. During this period, he successfully achieved both Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeships in the Equine Industry.

As part of the Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Framework, Jack also attained British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 2 Care and Ride and Stage 3 Care and Ride qualifications.

Jack’s interest in horse racing began at an early age, inspired by watching the sport on television and following the careers of legendary jockeys including Ruby Walsh and AP McCoy. That early fascination soon turned into ambition after he experienced horse riding lessons at a local equestrian centre.

Leaving school after Year 12, Jack secured an apprenticeship opportunity that allowed him to combine structured training with hands-on industry experience, enabling him to develop both his practical skills and professional confidence.

His dedication paid off in the autumn of 2025 when Jack recorded his first Point-to-Point win at Loughanmore, Dunadry. The victory carried added significance, as it came aboard a horse named Colvin, purchased by Jack’s father and grandfather after witnessing his passion and commitment to the sport.

With no prior family connections to the equine industry, the success marked a deeply personal milestone.

The race at Loughanmore was only Jack’s second competitive outing since achieving his Qualified Rider status, making the win all the more memorable.

Reflecting on a landmark weekend in his life, Jack said:

“I attended the Award’s Ceremony at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus on the Friday receiving my Level 3 Apprenticeship in The Equine Industry qualification and then won the race on the Saturday – what a weekend! Sharing the experiences with my Dad and Grandad, made it even more special. They’ve supported me every step of the way, and buying Colvin together was a real family effort. It’s something we’ll never forget.”

CAFRE staff say Jack’s story highlights the value of apprenticeships in offering young people a practical route into skilled employment, particularly within specialist sectors such as equine management and racing.

For Jack, the journey began immediately after his GCSEs, driven by a clear sense of purpose and supported by employers and mentors across the industry. His experience stands as a powerful example of how passion, when matched with opportunity and training, can lead to real success.

CAFRE is encouraging young people considering their post-GCSE options to explore Apprenticeships in the Equine Industry, which combine paid employment with structured learning through block-release training at the Enniskillen Campus.

Those interested can find out more at the upcoming Equine Open Day on Saturday 7 March 2026 at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus.
