RNLI lifeguards stationed at Whiterocks Beach sprang into action on Tuesday afternoon, responding to two separate incidents within a short timeframe and bringing three individuals to safety.
The first incident occurred shortly after 2pm when RNLI lifeguard Zak Kincaid spotted a paddleboarder struggling against strong offshore winds.
Realising the individual was being swept further out to sea, Zak swiftly launched the rescue watercraft from the beach. He reached the paddleboarder promptly and guided them safely back to shore.
Although visibly exhausted from the effort, the paddleboarder did not require medical attention and was described as being in good spirits after the ordeal.
Not long after, lifeguard Ben Scott noticed two children who had climbed up a 20-foot limestone outcrop along the beach and were unable to climb down. Reacting quickly, Ben scaled the outcrop and helped both children descend safely to the ground.
Speaking after the incidents, RNLI Senior Lifeguard Zak Kincaid praised the quick coordination between team members, and emphasised the importance of choosing lifeguarded beaches.
“It was a busy day on the beach with the combination of sunshine and strong offshore winds making conditions challenging,” he said.
“We would encourage all beachgoers to choose a lifeguarded beach to visit this summer just as the paddleboarder did today. As soon as they found themselves in any trouble, we were on hand to help.
“If you find yourself in difficulty or see someone else in trouble either on the beach or in and around the water, raise your hand and call for help, or call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.”
RNLI lifeguards patrol many of Northern Ireland’s most popular beaches throughout the summer season, providing a vital safety presence.
The charity urges beachgoers to be aware of sea conditions, particularly in sunny weather when strong offshore winds can quickly catch people unaware.
