Police have issued travel advice to football fans attending this evening’s UEFA World Cup Qualifier between Northern Ireland and Germany at Windsor Park, warning of potential traffic delays in south Belfast.
The match, which kicks off at 7.45pm on Monday, 13th October, is expected to draw large crowds to the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park, with gates opening from 6.15pm.
A build-up of traffic is anticipated in the Donegall Avenue area and surrounding routes both before and after the fixture, with police urging fans to allow extra travel time and plan their journeys accordingly.
A police spokesperson said:
“Supporters are advised to leave sufficient travel time for their journey, both before and after the match, and traffic congestion is likely in the area due to the expected volume of people attending the fixture.”
Fans travelling by car are reminded to park responsibly and show consideration for residents and local businesses.
“Supporters are also asked that if driving to the match, they park with consideration for local residents and businesses in the wider Donegall Avenue area,” the spokesperson added.
Police have also reminded supporters that street drinking is prohibited in the vicinity of the stadium.
“Please be respectful and considerate whilst walking through residential streets convenient to the stadium. The areas around the National Stadium are ‘No Street Drinking’ zones under Belfast City Council by-laws.”
Motorists not attending the match are advised to avoid the area if possible, with delays expected particularly along Boucher Road, Tates Avenue, Lisburn Road, and Donegall Avenue during peak arrival and departure times.
The high-profile qualifier is expected to attract thousands of fans, and authorities are encouraging the public to follow PSNI traffic updates and Translink travel advice throughout the evening.
