The newly resurfaced Galgorm Road in Ballymena
The resurfacing of a key route from Galgorm into Ballymena has been completed, bringing an improvement to a stretch of road which local representatives say had caused concern among residents for some time.
TUV councillors Stewart McDonald and Matthew Armstrong have welcomed the completion of the works on the main road into the town, saying carrying out the scheme during the summer holidays helped avoid some of the worst potential traffic disruption.
The work follows longstanding concerns over the condition of the route, which provides an important connection between Galgorm and Ballymena and is regularly used by residents and other road users travelling into and out of the town.
Summer timing helped limit disruption
The resurfacing inevitably resulted in some disruption while contractors were carrying out the work.
However, Councillors McDonald and Armstrong said scheduling the scheme during the summer holiday period reduced the potential impact at a time when school-related traffic was absent from the roads.
In a joint statement, they said:
“We are glad to see the completion of the work to resurface the main road from Galgorm into Ballymena. Obviously, there was some disruption to road users while the work was being carried out, but undertaking it during the summer holidays avoided some of the worst traffic problems.”
The completion of the scheme means motorists using the route will now benefit from the renewed road surface as normal traffic resumes ahead of the end of the summer holiday period.
Road condition had caused concern

The councillors said the condition of the road had been an issue both for them and for residents they represent.
They added:
“The condition of the road is something that has concerned both local residents and us as their representatives for some time. TUV has always pushed, and will continue to push, for the proper maintenance of the road network in the area, so this work is very welcome.”
The completed resurfacing comes amid continuing pressure for investment in the maintenance of roads across the Ballymena area.
Councillors McDonald and Armstrong said TUV would continue to press for the local road network to be properly maintained following the completion of the Galgorm scheme.
