Children flourish through messy play and outdoor learning at Action for Children’s SureStart programme
Toddlers across Ballymena and Antrim are thriving thanks to a unique early years initiative from Action for Children, which combines outdoor learning, sensory play, and community connection.
The ‘Little Learners’ programme, delivered as part of the Ballymena and Little Steps Antrim SureStart service, is helping young children develop vital skills through play-based learning.
Fully funded by the Department of Education, the programme has become a much-loved monthly event for local families.

Held at three community venues – Ballykeel and St Joseph’s in Ballymena and Steeple Road in Antrim – the sessions are designed to be more than just a “parent and tots” group.
Each class is carefully crafted by Early Years Practitioner Franci Simpson, whose focus is on hands-on, messy, and joyful experiences.
“We’re passionate about doing everything we can to help little ones thrive in the formative years of their lives – those first 1,001 days are so important,” said Franci.
“But ‘learning’ at this age isn’t about sitting with a pencil and trying to write the A, B, Cs. It’s about exploring, working things out by doing and having fun with your family and friends. That’s what we encourage at Little Learners and the feedback from parents tells us we’re on the right track!”

Whether it’s rock painting, potion-making, planting seeds, or simply getting mucky outside in all weathers, the Little Learners sessions are filled with fun, creativity and connection. Parents and caregivers also benefit, using the sessions to make friends, share experiences and enjoy quality time with their children in a safe, welcoming space.
The programme acts as a vital “bridge” between baby-focused classes and the more structured developmental programmes available for children aged two and three.

Jonjo
Local parent Elizabeth, whose son Jonjo attends, praised the programme’s impact on her child’s confidence:
“Jonjo just loves coming here. At nursery he’s really quiet and shy but when he’s here he’s just go, go, go! It’s a great group.”
Action for Children, a leading UK children’s charity, is proud to deliver the SureStart service in Ballymena and Antrim, aiming to ensure every child has the best start in life.
