Kilrea Bridge on the B64 Bann Road in Kilrea will fully reopen to all vehicles at 5pm on Wednesday 18 February, following the successful completion of permanent structural repair works, the Department for Infrastructure has confirmed.
The bridge, which has been restricted to cars and light vehicles since early December, will once again be accessible to all traffic as width and weight restrictions are lifted.
The reopening marks the completion of the main stabilisation works, restoring normal access for motorists, businesses and communities who have been affected by the restrictions over recent months.
Structural stabilisation works completed
A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) said:
“Permanent repair works at Kilrea Bridge have progressed well and are on schedule, allowing us to fully reopen the bridge to all traffic on Wednesday afternoon. This marks the completion of the structural stabilisation works and will restore normal access for all road users.
“The Department is mindful of the impact the traffic restrictions have had on local residents, businesses and commuters and would like to thank them for their patience and cooperation throughout this period.”
The bridge has played a key role in connecting communities along the Bann Road, with the restrictions requiring many motorists to adjust travel routes and journey times.
Temporary 40mph speed limit to remain
Although the main structural works have now been completed and restrictions removed, a temporary 40mph speed limit will remain in place for several weeks.
The DfI spokesperson added:
“While the main structural work is complete and the width and weight restrictions removed, the temporary 40mph speed limit will remain in place for several weeks. This is to facilitate a number of minor construction activities, including masonry repairs, resurfacing, kerbing and improvements to the parapet.
“A temporary barrier will remain on the carriageway for the protection of both workers and road users during these operations.
“As weather conditions have not been suitable for repointing of the southwest wingwall the contractor will return during the summer months to complete this element of the work. Any traffic management measures required for the remaining activities will be of a short duration and carried out during off-peak hours to minimise disruption.”
The remaining activities are expected to be completed with minimal disruption, with any necessary traffic management measures implemented during off-peak hours.
