Frew welcomes road safety improvements outside Ballymena Primary School

North Antrim MLA Paul Frew has welcomed action to improve road safety outside Ballymena Primary School after he raised concerns with the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) on behalf of the school.
Fresh yellow zig-zag markings have now been installed after the school’s principal highlighted faded road markings and malfunctioning flashing school safety signs.
While the road markings have been refreshed, the flashing warning signs have yet to be repaired — and Mr Frew says he will continue pressing the Department to have the outstanding problem resolved.
Concerns raised over school safety measures
Mr Frew said he contacted DfI after being approached by the principal about the condition of the safety measures outside the school.
The North Antrim MLA said:
“After being contacted by the Principal of Ballymena Primary School regarding safety concerns with faded yellow zig-zag lines and malfunctioning flashing school safety signs, I contacted the Department for Infrastructure to get a resolution to these concerns.
“I am delighted that as a result of my correspondence the yellow zig-zag lines have today been redrawn and refreshed, this will be a significant safety improvement for both children and parents trying to access the school.
“I want to thank DFI for their swift response to this issue. I will continue to raise the issue of the malfunctioning flashing school safety signs to see them repaired as soon as possible.”
Flashing safety signs still awaiting repair
The refreshed zig-zag markings provide a clearer warning to motorists around the school entrance and are intended to help keep the area clear at busy drop-off and collection times.
However, the concerns raised by the school have not yet been fully resolved, with the flashing school safety signs still reported to be malfunctioning.
Mr Frew said he intends to continue pursuing the issue with DfI until the signs are repaired, with their restoration remaining the outstanding element of the safety concerns initially raised by the school.
