Young man, 20, dies after overnight collision in Co Antrim

A 20-year-old man has died following a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the Castlecat Road in Dervock in the early hours of Sunday morning.


The fatal crash happened shortly before 1am on Sunday, April 5, prompting an overnight emergency response and a police investigation at the scene.


The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed on Sunday that the driver, a man from the Crossgar area, was taken to hospital after the collision but later died from his injuries.



Collision happened shortly before 1am


According to police, officers received a report of a collision involving a grey BMW shortly before 1am.


Emergency services, including police and other emergency partners, attended the scene on the Castlecat Road during the early hours of the morning.


Detective Inspector Stewart from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit said:


“Police received a report of a collision involving a grey BMW shortly before one am.



“Officers attended alongside emergency partners, and the male driver, who was aged 20 and from the Crossgar area, was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries, where he sadly passed away.”


The incident involved a single vehicle, with no other vehicles reported to have been involved.


Road closed overnight as enquiries carried out


The Castlecat Road remained closed overnight while detectives carried out enquiries at the scene.



The closure was put in place to allow collision investigators to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash and gather evidence.


Police have since confirmed that the road has now reopened to motorists.


Police appeal for witnesses and dash-cam footage


Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the collision and are now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.



Police are also asking drivers who may have been travelling in the area at the time to check any digital footage, including dash-cam recordings, that could assist the investigation.


Detective Inspector Stewart added:


“Our enquiries are continuing, and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have digital footage which could assist with our investigation, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 76 of 05/04/26.”
