A yellow weather warning for ice has been issued for Northern Ireland, with hazardous conditions expected to develop overnight as temperatures fall and wintry showers move across the region.

The warning is in force between 6:00pm on Tuesday 6 January 2026 and 11:00am on Wednesday 7 January 2026, with icy patches likely to form on untreated surfaces, increasing the risk of travel disruption.

Forecasters say that after a day that has been less cold than recent days, conditions are set to change rapidly this evening as clearing skies and scattered wintry showers move in. These conditions are expected to allow temperatures to drop sharply overnight, creating a renewed risk of ice.

According to the weather advisory, “clearing skies and a scattering of wintry showers from this evening will once again bring an ice risk overnight, especially on untreated surfaces.”

It is also warned that “showers may give a fresh dusting of snow in a few places,” which could further increase hazards on roads, pavements and rural routes.

Disruption risks for commuters and vulnerable residents

The warning highlights the potential for slippery conditions during the Wednesday morning commute, particularly on lesser-treated roads, pavements and cycle paths. Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists are being urged to take extra care.

For many residents, especially older people or those with mobility difficulties, icy pavements can present a serious risk. Community organisations and neighbours are encouraged to check in on vulnerable individuals and ensure pathways are gritted where possible.

Public transport users may also experience minor delays if conditions worsen overnight, while early-morning drivers are advised to allow extra time for journeys.

Advice to stay safe

People across Northern Ireland are advised to:

  • Take care when walking or driving overnight and into Wednesday morning

  • Be alert for icy patches, particularly in shaded or untreated areas

  • Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours where possible

The warning remains under review, with conditions expected to improve later on Wednesday as temperatures rise.
