Man, 75, extradited from Australia to face historic child sex offence charges in Northern Ireland

A 75-year-old man has been extradited from Australia to Northern Ireland to stand trial on a series of historic sexual offence charges dating back more than four decades.

The man arrived in Northern Ireland today, Wednesday 5 August, after completing extradition proceedings following his arrest in the Australian state of Victoria in 2023.

He is wanted to stand trial on 14 charges of indecent assault on a female and three charges of committing an act of gross indecency with a child.

The alleged offences are said to have taken place in Northern Ireland between the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Court appearance expected on Thursday

The 75-year-old is expected to appear before Laganside Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 6 August.

As criminal proceedings are now active, the charges remain allegations and have not been tested in court.

Sergeant Davey, from the PSNI’s International Policing Unit, said the extradition reflected the force’s determination to bring people accused of serious crimes before the courts, regardless of where they are living.

“Today’s extradition demonstrates our commitment to tracking down those wanted for serious offending here in Northern Ireland.

“In this case we worked closely with the UK Home Office and Australian authorities to locate, arrest and return this suspect. Our message is clear to anyone who has left Northern Ireland to avoid the consequences of their actions. We will relentlessly pursue those that are trying to delay or deny justice to victims of crime.”

He added:

“The Police Service of Northern Ireland appreciates the excellent help and support from our partners in the Australian Federal Police based in Victoria. We will continue to work together to make sure offenders are brought before the courts.”

The case will now move into the Northern Ireland courts, where the allegations against the accused will be considered through the criminal justice process.
