Translink has issued important back-to-school travel advice as thousands of pupils prepare to return to classrooms across Northern Ireland next week.
With more than 60,000 pupils relying on Translink buses and trains every day, the organisation is urging parents, guardians and students to plan ahead, check timetables, and stay safe when travelling.
New bus timetables for Ulsterbus, Metro/Glider and Goldliner services will come into effect on Monday 1st September, coinciding with the start of the new school term.
Passengers are advised to use the Journey Planner app or visit the Translink website to check services before setting out, and to allow extra time for journeys.
David Cowan, Translink’s Director of Commercial Operations, said:
“We realise the start of the new school term can be both exciting and daunting, so we want to help ease any pressures with safe, comfortable services and great value ticket options that offer pupils more freedom and independence.”
Student travel options
Translink is reminding students to ‘tap to travel’ using their Education Authority (EA) Smartpass. For those not eligible, a range of value ticket options is available.
Sixth form pupils returning to Year 13 can also apply for a free yLink card, which is open to all 16–23-year-olds and offers 50% off bus and rail travel across Northern Ireland.
Safety and climate awareness
The operator is also calling on passengers to stay alert and avoid distractions such as headphones and mobile phones when boarding and exiting services, particularly near roads, stairs, and platforms.
Mr Cowan added:
“We also know that many young people are leading the way in calling for climate action. Travelling by public transport today in Northern Ireland is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint. It’s also a healthier and more active way to travel and helps reduce congestion.”
Partnership with the Education Authority
Translink works closely with the Education Authority (EA) to ensure services are prepared for the return to school.
Niall McKinley, EA’s Head of Service, Transport, said:
“We’re looking forward to welcoming pupils back and playing our part in supporting their educational journey. Using public transport not only offers a safe and cost-effective way to travel, but also helps children build independence and social skills, while reducing congestion at peak times.”
