Families planning Easter getaways are being urged to plan ahead as Translink confirms timetable changes — alongside special seaside trains and discounted travel offers across Northern Ireland.

With thousands expected to take advantage of the holiday break, the public transport provider says it is gearing up to offer “comfortable, affordable and hassle-free” journeys for both local trips and longer days out.

Holiday timetable changes confirmed

Passengers should expect changes to normal weekday services on Easter Monday and Tuesday (6–7 April), with a mix of weekend and holiday schedules in operation.

According to Translink’s Director of Service Operations, Ian Campbell, services will vary depending on route and mode of transport.

  • Ulsterbus and Goldliner: Saturday, Sunday or holiday timetables depending on route

  • Metro and Glider: Sunday timetable on Easter Monday, Saturday timetable on Easter Tuesday

  • NI Railways: Saturday schedules on both days

  • School holiday timetables will apply throughout the Easter period

Mr Campbell said the adjustments are designed to reflect changing travel patterns while still providing reliable connections for passengers.

Special trains to Portrush

In a boost for families and day-trippers, special trains to Portrush will run on both Easter Monday and Tuesday.

Departing from Belfast Grand Central Station at 9.40am and returning at 6.25pm, the services are aimed at those looking to enjoy a traditional seaside day out.

Tickets are priced at £24 for up to two adults and four children, making it one of the most affordable family travel options available over the holiday.

Value fares aimed at families

Translink is also promoting a range of discounted ticket options to encourage public transport use:

  • Family & Friends Ticket (£24): Unlimited day travel across Northern Ireland

  • Metro & Glider Family Day Ticket (£10): Unlimited Belfast travel

  • Bus Rambler (£10): Unlimited bus and Glider travel after 9.15am

  • Rail offer: 25% off day return fares after 9.30am

All family tickets cover up to two adults and four children, positioning them as a cost-effective alternative to driving during the busy holiday period.

Encouraging Easter travel

Mr Campbell said:

“Whether you’re planning an Easter break, or short trips closer to home, there are comfortable, affordable and hassle-free ways to travel with our attractive, everyday fare offers and public transport options this Easter.

“With our wide range of services and good value tickets available, we’re looking forward to helping more people enjoy safe, reliable and convenient journeys by bus and train this Easter.”
