With just days to go until The 153rd Open Championship begins at Royal Portrush, final preparations are nearing completion—not just on the famous links course, but also at the vibrant hub of affordable accommodation that is The Open Camping Village.

Located just a short shuttle ride away at Ulster University’s Coleraine campus, the village is set to welcome around 4,800 guests during the Championship, making it the second largest accommodation provider on the island for the week.

This year’s bookings equate to a record-breaking 11,500 total bed nights, surpassing the previous high of 10,000 at St Andrews in 2022.

Affordable and accessible accommodation

First launched by The R&A at Royal Troon in 2016, The Open Camping Village is a key initiative designed to tackle the cost barrier of attending The Open, especially for young fans.

This year, approximately one-third of all bookings are from guests under the age of 25, with 3,500 free bed nights secured for young people. Adult camping starts at £55 per person per night, and more than 750 tents of various sizes are already booked.

“The Open Camping Village is a fantastic initiative run by The R&A, providing an affordable alternative for families and young people who wish to be part of The Open experience,” said Eimear Hone, Major Events Manager at Tourism NI.

Running from 12pm on Sunday 13 July to 10am on Monday 21 July, the site is more than just a place to sleep. Guests will enjoy access to toilets, showers, organised activities, and a clubhouse complete with a licensed bar and entertainment for up to 500 people.

In addition to the lively on-site environment, local suppliers and businesses will also play a major role in shaping the guest experience. From street food vendors and laundry services to security and sanitation, the village provides a welcome boost to the local economy.

“In addition, the village provides an additional opportunity for local suppliers to show why the region is known worldwide for its rich food and drink offering. Their presence at the site will further enhance the experience for guests,” Ms Hone added.

A truly global gathering

This year, the site will welcome campers from 31 different countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Cayman Islands, Singapore, Sweden, and South Africa.

Notably, practice days (Monday and Tuesday) will see more campers than at any previous Open.

As the countdown continues, the buzz across the North Coast is unmistakable. While the world’s best golfers prepare for their shot at the Claret Jug, the Camping Village is primed to deliver a championship experience of its own—affordable, inclusive, and full of energy.
