Two Slemish College students, Scarlet Kerr-McKillop and Darragh Martin, were among the young people given the chance to step inside NI Water’s laboratories as the utility company kicked off the second year of its hybrid work experience programme.

The pair joined aspiring scientists from across Northern Ireland for an immersive mix of virtual and in-person learning designed to give students aged 16 to 19 real-world insight into scientific careers.

The opportunity forms part of NI Water’s growing partnership with social mobility charity Futures for All (formerly Speakers for Schools).

Scarlet and Darragh took part in a series of practical activities, including virtual tours of water and wastewater treatment centres using VR headsets, hands-on laboratory experiments, and interactive sessions led by NI Water professionals.

The experience allowed them to see scientific processes in action and ask questions directly to staff about their career paths.

NI Water’s hybrid work experience initiative returned this autumn following a highly successful first year, during which almost 80 students participated in workshops, talks and technical demonstrations both online and in person.

The programme has been praised for increasing accessibility by enabling students from all backgrounds to gain industry insights without geographical or financial barriers.

This year’s November intake placed a special emphasis on science-based careers, giving students like Scarlet and Darragh a close-up look at the essential work behind Northern Ireland’s water and wastewater services.

NI Water Plans More Opportunities for 2026

NI Water, a multi award-winning employer, has confirmed that its investment in developing future talent will continue. Additional hybrid programmes are scheduled for 2026, with the next session—centred on engineering careers—set for February.

Helen Devlin, NI Water’s Head of HR Operations, said:

“We’re really proud of the incredible success of our Hybrid Work Experience Programme so far. It’s been inspiring to see so many young people gain meaningful insights into the world of water and science, building skills that will shape their future.

“Looking ahead to 2026, we’re excited to provide even more opportunities for students – expanding access to enriching work experience – and helping the next generation explore innovative career paths in an ever-evolving industry.”

NI Water says its ongoing collaboration with Futures for All will continue to play a key role in offering high-quality career development experiences to young people across the region.
