Royal Portrush will stage The 132ndAmateur Championship in 2027.

Royal Portrush is set to welcome the world’s elite amateur golfers once again, after The R&A confirmed the iconic County Antrim venue will stage the 132nd Amateur Championship in June 2027.

The announcement places Portrush firmly back on the global golfing stage, less than a year after hosting The 153rd Open, and reinforces its standing as one of the sport’s most revered links destinations.

The championship will run from 14–19 June 2027 at Royal Portrush Golf Club. Stroke play qualifying will be contested across both the Dunluce and Valley links, with the match play stages held on the Dunluce course. A pre-qualifier will take place on 11 June over the Valley.

The Northern Ireland venue has hosted The Amateur Championship three times previously, most recently in 2014 when Scotland’s Bradley Neil claimed the title.

Global pathway to The Open

The 132nd Amateur Championship forms part of a wider programme of amateur championships and international matches unveiled by The R&A on 23 February 2026 in St Andrews.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Chief Championships Officer at The R&A, said:

“It is important for The R&A to continue to underline the status of our amateur championships and international matches as leading events in amateur golf.

“They provide a pathway for elite golfers and give life-changing opportunities, including those that offer exemptions to The Open and the AIG Women’s Open.

“We aim to attract the best amateur players from around the world in 2027 and look forward to staging our championships at some of the sport’s most prestigious venues.”

The Amateur Championship is widely regarded as one of the most significant titles in amateur golf, offering a direct route to the professional stage through exemptions into major championships.

Other major venues confirmed

Elsewhere, the 124th Women’s Amateur Championship will be hosted at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club for the third time. The historic links on England’s south-east coast, a Final Qualifying venue for The Open, will welcome the world’s leading women amateurs for the first time since 1988.

The staging will also mark the 125th anniversary of the event being held at the venue in 1902.

The R&A Girls’ and Boys’ Amateur Championships will be staged at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club and Prince’s Golf Club respectively from 9–14 August.

Meanwhile, the Women’s and Men’s Senior Amateur Championships will be played concurrently at Blairgowrie Golf Club from 6–9 July.

International matches between Great Britain & Ireland and the Continent of Europe will also feature in 2027. The Jacques Léglise Trophy and the Junior Vagliano Trophy will be contested at Golf de Morfontaine from 20–21 August.

Dates and venues for the St Andrews Trophy and the Vagliano Trophy in 2027 have yet to be confirmed, as have the dates for The Women’s Amateur Championship.

What it means for Portrush

For Portrush and the wider County Antrim area, the return of The Amateur Championship signals another major moment in the town’s modern golfing story.

With its Dunluce and Valley links once again set to test the game’s brightest emerging talent, the event promises not only elite competition but renewed international attention for Northern Ireland’s north coast.

Entries for this year’s championships in Great Britain and Ireland open at the end of this week. Full details can be viewed at www.randa.org
