One of Northern Ireland’s biggest sporting events
The North West 200 attracts riders and fans from across the world each year and is regarded as one of the most prestigious road racing events on the international calendar.
The high-speed circuit, which runs between Portstewart, Coleraine and Portrush, is known for its long straights and fast corners, drawing huge crowds to the north coast annually.
Thursday’s fatal incident comes during one of the busiest periods of race week, with qualifying and race sessions taking place ahead of the main race day programme.
The event is continuing following discussions with the rider’s family, while the racing community across Northern Ireland and beyond is expected to rally around those affected by the tragedy in the hours ahead.
