Mid and East Antrim Borough Council planners are considering a planning application for a new 3G football pitch and spectator stand at Ballymena Showgrounds.

The application has been submitted by an agent on behalf of the council for proposed works at the home of Ballymena United Football Club.

The proposal includes the installation of a full-size 3G pitch to replace the existing grass pitch, along with a new 200-seat spectator stand and floodlighting.

According to a supporting statement, the development would take place on Pitch 7 of the Ballymena Showgrounds site, located off St Patrick’s Barracks Link Road.

Planned works would see the current grass pitch upgraded to a larger 3G surface, the addition of a spectator stand on the eastern side, and the installation of four 18.3-metre-high floodlight columns.

Other proposed features include a perimeter path around the pitch, 12-metre-high ball stop fencing behind each goal, and a 1.2-metre-high fence with gates surrounding the facility to improve spectator safety. Drainage improvements are also included in the scheme.

Access to the new facility would be gained directly from St Patrick’s Barracks Link Road, serving on-site parking areas.

A planning statement supporting the proposal describes the current grass pitch as “a key community facility in close proximity to Ballymena Showgrounds, making it readily available for use by young people.”

It continues:

“The proposed improvement works provide an opportunity for investment into the local community, offering both immediate and long-term benefits.

“Regarding long-term community benefits, the installation of access gates for pitch maintenance ensures that the grounds can be easily and regularly maintained, preserving the quality of the pitch for years to come.

“With the installation of a fence to shield neighbouring roads, users can continue to utilise pitches on site without the risk of stray balls, making the site safer for all users.

“The inclusion of a new spectator area could make this pitch a potential option for use for bigger games or events.”
