A familiar face on the North Coast is now telling the story of lives saved at sea, as the RNLI marks a major milestone with a new podcast — just as lifeguards return to local beaches ahead of the Easter break.
Portrush-based lifeguard supervisor Michael Jess is the narrator of We Are Lifeguards, a five-part series launched this week to celebrate 25 years of RNLI lifeguarding across the UK and Ireland.
The timing is no coincidence. The podcast release coincides with the seasonal return of RNLI lifeguards to six North Coast beaches, as thousands prepare to head seaside for the holidays.
A local voice behind a national story
Michael’s journey with the RNLI began nine years ago on Portstewart Strand. In 2025, he stepped into the role of Lifeguard Supervisor — and now lends his voice to a project highlighting the realities of frontline coastal safety.
He said:
“I was very honoured to be asked to be part of this podcast for the RNLI Lifeguard’s 25th Anniversary.
“We Are Lifeguards is a series that takes a closer look at what it’s like to keep people safe at the seaside. Across five episodes, we explore just some of the different aspects of lifeguarding, from the equipment lifeguards use and the training they do, to how every beach poses its own challenge.”
The series also shares powerful real-life accounts from those rescued by RNLI teams.
Michael added:
“It is great to hear the stories of those we’ve saved. They are some of our biggest supporters who really appreciate the work that we do.
“This was an amazing project, and collaborating with the Lifeguard 25th Anniversary team was great fun. I’m incredibly proud to have been part of something that highlights the dedication, skill, and impact of RNLI lifeguards.”
25 years of lifesaving impact
The RNLI’s lifeguard service has grown into a vital part of coastal safety over the past quarter century.
Across the UK and Channel Islands, lifeguards have carried out more than 48 million preventative actions, responded to over 330,000 incidents, and helped more than 440,000 people.
In Northern Ireland, RNLI lifeguards were introduced in 2011, covering key beaches including Benone, Downhill, Castlerock, Portrush West Strand, Blackrocks, Portrush East, Whiterocks and Portstewart Strand.
Lifeguards return as busy season begins
With lifeguards now back on patrol for the Easter period, the RNLI is urging the public to make safety part of their plans.
Michael said:
“Our lifeguards are highly trained, capable and skilled and spend their time talking to people, sharing our safety advice and educating visitors about the dangers as well as carrying out rescues and first aid.
“The launch of this podcast not only marks our 25th anniversary, but also the return of lifeguards to beaches ahead of what will be another busy summer. If you are heading to the coast, we would encourage you to choose a RNLI lifeguarded beach.”
