The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for eastern parts of Northern Ireland on Saturday, 14 June, as heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast to cause potential disruption across several counties.

The warning, which comes into effect from 6:00am until 6:00pm, will apply to Counties Antrim, Down and Armagh, with forecasters warning of localised flooding, difficult driving conditions, and possible travel disruption.

A Met Office spokesperson outlined the severity of the forecast, stating:

“Areas of heavy rain and some thunderstorms will spread north and west across parts of Northern Ireland early on Saturday morning.

“The rain will turn more showery in the afternoon and there will be a risk of thunderstorms.

“Rainfall will vary across the warning area and some places missing the heaviest rain. However, where heavy rain occurs, 15-30 mm of rain is likely and a few areas may perhaps see 30-50 mm falling in a few hours. Gusty winds and hail may also accompany some of the thunderstorms.”

Potential disruption

While not all areas will experience the full impact of the weather front, those that do could see significant downpours in a short period of time.

The 30-50mm rainfall expected in isolated areas could cause surface water flooding, particularly in urban and low-lying zones, as drainage systems struggle to cope with sudden influxes.

The Met Office warning also cautions of gusty winds and the possibility of hail, particularly in areas where thunderstorms develop more intensely. Motorists are advised to take care on the roads, especially during peak travel times on Saturday morning and early afternoon.

Public urged to take precaution

Residents and visitors in the affected regions are encouraged to stay informed via local weather updates and to plan travel carefully, allowing additional time where needed. Outdoor events scheduled in the region on Saturday may also be impacted by the adverse weather.
