Ballycastle is set for another major day on the local sporting calendar next month as the Marconi’s 5 Mile Race returns on Sunday, 24 May 2026, with organisers confirming that McAuley Freight Ltd has joined Ballycastle Runners for a third consecutive year as one of the event’s main sponsors.

The Ballycastle and Belfast-based freight forwarding and transport firm is once again lending its support to one of the north coast’s most popular road races, with this year’s event already selling out in record time ahead of race day.

The race, organised by Ballycastle Runners, will get underway at 10.15am from the tennis courts at Ballycastle seafront, where runners and spectators are expected to gather for what has become a standout fixture in the local running and community events calendar.

A fast coastal route with a demanding finish

Participants taking part in this year’s sold-out event will follow a scenic but competitive route designed to appeal to both experienced runners and enthusiastic club athletes.

The course begins with a flat and fast stretch along the Carrickmore Road, offering runners the opportunity to settle into pace early on.

From there, the return leg introduces a tougher challenge, with competitors facing a notable climb towards Corrymeela — a section likely to test endurance and race strategy.

However, the route rewards that effort on the way back down, with runners descending through one of the most visually striking stretches of the Causeway Coast.

The final stages bring participants back towards the seafront, where supporters will be waiting to welcome them home against the backdrop of Ballycastle’s coastline.

The combination of a quick opening section, a demanding climb, and panoramic coastal views has helped cement the Marconi’s 5 Mile Race as a favourite among runners across Northern Ireland and beyond.

Prizes, medals and race-day atmosphere

Every participant crossing the finish line will receive a specially designed commemorative medal and event T-shirt, both created exclusively for the 2026 race.

Organisers have also confirmed that cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers, alongside additional prizes across the various age categories.

Beyond the competitive element, the event is also known for its strong community atmosphere.

Supporters attending on the day can expect entertainment before and after the race, while runners will be able to enjoy post-race refreshments, traditionally one of the most anticipated parts of the event.

That blend of competition, scenery and community spirit has helped the race build a strong reputation, with demand this year once again exceeding available places.

Sell-out event expected to draw strong crowds

With entries now fully sold out, organisers are urging local residents and visitors to come along and cheer on the runners as they make their way around the course.

Large crowds are expected along the seafront and key sections of the route, particularly around the finish area where runners will complete the final leg of the five-mile challenge.

The continued backing from McAuley Freight Ltd, now in its third year as a main sponsor, is expected to further strengthen the event’s profile and support its continued growth.

For Ballycastle, the race represents more than a sporting event — bringing together local businesses, running clubs, families and visitors for a major community day on the north coast.
