The Diamond, Kilrea
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has confirmed that a £190,000 road improvement scheme will begin in Kilrea later this month, targeting two of the town’s busiest roundabouts.
The resurfacing works on the A54 The Diamond and Church Street roundabouts will commence on Monday 25 August 2025 and are expected to be substantially completed by Sunday 7 September 2025, subject to weather conditions.
Minister Kimmins described the investment as an important step forward for the area.
She said:
“This is a substantial investment for the Kilrea area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities.
“I would like to thank residents, local businesses, and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”
Overnight closures and diversions
To allow work to proceed safely, overnight road closures will be in place on weekdays from 8pm to 6am throughout the project’s duration.
The Department for Infrastructure confirmed that two diversionary routes will operate during the closures:
Diversion 1: A54 Coleraine Street – A54 Agivey Road – B66 Glenkeen Road – B207 Moneybrannon Road – B66 Ardreagh Road – B66 Greenhill Road – A29 Drumcroon Road – A29 Coleraine Road – A29 Main Street – B64 Bridge Street – B64 Edenbane Road – B64 Kilrea Road – B64 Garvagh Road – B64 Maghera Street (and vice versa).
Diversion 2: A54 Moneygran Road – A54 Kilrea Road – A42 Clady Road – A42 Main Street – B96 Townhill Road – B64 Bann Road – B64 Bridge Street (and vice versa).
The Department said every effort has been made to minimise disruption, though some delays are expected. Road users are advised to allow extra travel time and follow all temporary traffic restrictions.
Further updates will be provided if the schedule changes due to adverse weather.
