The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has today confirmed elevated levels of blue-green algae at Rea’s Wood, located at Antrim Loughshore.

As a precaution, temporary advice against bathing has been issued from 10 July 2025. Visitors are urged to look out for bathing water operator signage on site for the most up-to-date and location-specific guidance.

Northern Ireland’s official bathing season runs from 1 June to 15 September each year. During this time, DAERA regularly monitors water quality to ensure it remains safe for public use.

Blue-green algae can pose health risks to both humans and animals. Swallowing or contact with affected water may cause skin irritation, stomach upsets, or more serious illness. Pet owners should also take extra care to keep animals out of the water.

DAERA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
