Two remarkable women from County Antrim had the honour of attending Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, 20 May, in recognition of their long-standing commitment to supporting children and families in Northern Ireland.

Franci Simpson and Allison Shaw, who both work with the charity Action for Children, which supports and protects children, young people and families in Northern Ireland and across the UK, were invited to the prestigious Royal Garden Party held at the Palace.

Their attendance marked national recognition of their dedication to early years education and care, through their roles at Ballymena and Little Steps Antrim SureStart.

Franci, an experienced and passionate Early Years professional, joined the project 21 years ago in creche services. Over the years, she has grown into a talented Team Leader, pioneering play and learning opportunities for young children and their parents within SureStart.

Known for her passion and creativity, Franci has led initiatives that support play-based learning and parental engagement, shaping the lives of countless families.

Allison is a talented and dedicated Early Years Practitioner and has worked within the early years team at Action for Children for almost 18 years. In that time, she has transformed the outcomes for many children through her reflective approach to children and their learning environments.

The pair attended the garden party dressed in their finest attire, mingling with other guests and enjoying the rare privilege of meeting Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales, who serves as Patron of Action for Children.

Reflecting on the experience, Franci said:

“Attending the royal garden party and meeting the Princess of Wales was such a special experience—one I’ll never forget. It was an absolute honour to be invited, and Her Royal Highness was so genuine and kind, taking the time to chat with us in such a sincere way.

“The beautiful weather made the day even more perfect, adding to the joy of an occasion that will be a core memory for me.”

Action for Children, one of the UK’s leading children’s charities, supports children, young people and families through a wide range of services across the country.

The Sure Start programmes in Ballymena and Antrim are at the heart of this work in Northern Ireland, providing early intervention services that are often life-changing.

The event at Buckingham Palace served not only as a celebration of individual excellence, but as a powerful reminder of the essential role early years professionals play in the wellbeing and development of young children.

As Franci and Allison return to their work in Ballymena and Antrim, their recognition on a national stage will no doubt inspire others in the sector to continue striving for excellence in support of children and families.
