Two men charged after armed fight at Ballymena housing development

Two men have been charged following an armed fight in a Ballymena housing development that unfolded while children were playing nearby.

The charges relate to an incident in the St Patrick’s Place area on Thursday, July 16, when police were called to reports of a fight. Witnesses at the time reported seeing weapons including what appeared to be a knife, a sword and a shovel during the disorder.

Two to appear in court

A man in his 50s has been charged with possessing an offensive weapon in public and affray.

A second man, aged in his 40s, has been charged with possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and disorderly behaviour.

Both men are due to appear before Ballymena Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, August 13.

As is standard procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

Teenager released for diversion process

A teenage boy, described by police as being in his late teens, was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and affray.

He has since been released to be reported to the Youth Diversion Officer.

The incident prompted concern among residents after it took place in St Patrick’s Place, part of the regenerated former St Patrick’s Barracks site, during the afternoon while children were outside in the neighbourhood.
