The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has announced its intention to increase fares on the ferry services to Rathlin Island and across Strangford Lough, with a statutory 30-day notice period to commence on today, Monday 27 October 2025.
Background & Context
Rathlin Island is Northern Ireland’s only inhabited offshore island and falls under the wider Rathlin Island Policy, a Northern Ireland Executive policy aimed at ensuring “continued and sustainable growth” of the island.
DfI provides an oversight and coordinating role for the policy and subsidises the ferry service so that fares can be kept as low as possible.
Similarly, the Strangford Lough ferry service receives ongoing subsidy and oversight from DfI.
What the Notice Says
The announcement states that the change to fares will be subject to the statutory 30-day notice period beginning 27 October.
It further notes that the Department “is supportive of both services and provides an ongoing subsidy for the ferry services, so that fares can be kept as low as possible.”
The new fares announced are available below for both services:

Public Consultation & Next Steps
The statutory notice opens on 27 October and lasts for 30 days, during which stakeholders—including residents, commuters, tourism operators, and local councils—can review the proposed changes and lodge responses.
After the notice period, DfI will consider any feedback and confirm the implementation date of the revised fares. The press release does not yet confirm the exact implementation date or the final fare levels.
Any person may, within a period of 30 days from the date of publication of this Notice, object to the issuing of the Direction by notice to RathlinFerry@infrastructure-ni.gov.uk or in writing to the Department for Infrastructure, Public Transport Operations, 1st Floor, Rathkeltair House, Market Street, Downpatrick, BT30 6AJ informing it of the grounds upon which the objection is made.
Considerations & Stakeholder Impact
The services are lifeline links for the island community and for those travelling across Strangford Lough. The subsidy support from DfI indicates a recognition of their strategic importance.
However, fare increases can place additional cost burdens on residents, tourists and local businesses. Previous increases have drawn criticism from elected representatives over the impact on accessibility and affordability.
