With Christmas fast approaching, the Consumer Council has published a series of practical travel tips designed to help passengers prepare for smooth and stress-free journeys over the festive season.

The organisation is urging travellers across Northern Ireland to plan ahead—whether flying from local airports, sailing, or using public transport—to avoid unnecessary delays at one of the busiest times of the year.

Michelle Kelly, Head of Transport Policy at the Consumer Council, said:

“Many people will be looking forward to travelling during the Christmas period whether it’s to meet friends, shopping or catching up with family. There are some simple things you can do to take the stress out of travelling. This includes checking out public transport holiday timetables or if you’re flying, familiarising yourself with the latest rules around check-in and security.

“If you’re sailing or flying, it’s also good to check your consumer rights when it comes to delays or cancellations. Our website at www.consumercouncil.org.uk has lots of information and guidance on travel and transport.”

Planning ahead for a hassle-free Christmas journey

The Consumer Council’s guidance covers public transport, driving, airport security, baggage requirements, and the rights of passengers facing delays or cancellations.

Translink passengers are advised to check holiday timetables in advance and make use of Late Night Services, which operate every Friday and Saturday night from 28 November 2025 as part of a year-long pilot scheme supporting festive nights out.

Those relying on taxis are encouraged to pre-book, particularly on peak travel days, and to be aware that operators are permitted to charge higher fares at certain times over Christmas.

Travellers with a disability or reduced mobility are reminded to pre-book airport or ferry assistance at least 48 hours ahead of their journey to ensure availability.

Top travel tips from the Consumer Council

  • Check public transport timetables – Confirm Translink’s holiday schedules before travelling.

  • Translink Late Night Services – Additional buses, coaches and trains are operating on selected routes every Friday and Saturday night from 28 November 2025.

  • Book taxis in advance – Demand rises sharply during the festive season, and fares may vary on specific Christmas dates.

  • Pre-book travel assistance – Request assistance with your airline or ferry operator when booking, or at least 48 hours before departure.

  • Review airport security rules – Pay close attention to liquid restrictions in hand luggage and note that security procedures can differ across airports.

  • Avoid wrapping gifts – Security may need to inspect your luggage.

  • Check passport and visa requirements – Ensure documents are valid for the duration of your trip.

  • Know check-in and boarding requirements – Some airlines use paperless boarding; always confirm before travelling.

  • Understand baggage rules – Familiarise yourself with weight and size restrictions to avoid unexpected fees.

  • Stay informed – Read all airline updates and act promptly if your flight is cancelled or altered.

The Consumer Council also encourages the public to review its detailed advice on air and ferry travel, along with information on passenger rights.
