Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has agreed a below-inflation District Rate increase of 3.35% for the 2026/27 financial year, following a Special Council meeting held on 12 February 2026.

The decision means householders in the borough will pay an additional £20.58 per year — equivalent to £0.40 per week — based on a domestic property with a rateable value of £124,728.

The Council said both officers and elected members had “worked diligently” to deliver a smaller than expected increase for residents, despite significantly increased operating costs.

Impact on households across the Borough

For many families and residents across Causeway Coast and Glens, the agreed District Rate determines funding for essential local services and community facilities. The additional £0.40 per week will contribute to maintaining frontline operations and sustaining key services throughout 2026/27.

The District Rate funds a wide range of public services, including:

  • Arts, events and recreation

  • Building control

  • Leisure and community centres

  • Environmental health

  • Tourism

  • Waste management

The Regional Rate, which represents just over half of rates bills, is agreed by the Northern Ireland Executive and has yet to be announced.

Investment across Causeway Coast and Glens

Over the past 12 months, the Council has continued investment across the borough, describing the area as one of the most stunning in Northern Ireland.

Planned and ongoing projects include PEACEPLUS initiatives spanning locations from the Glens and Layd Path Cushendall to coastal areas such as the Girona Causeway Coastal Path.

Investment has also been directed towards improving football facilities in Burnfoot, with works nearing completion later this month.

In addition, construction of the new Ballycastle Leisure Centre — described as sustainably built — is nearing completion. The project represents an investment of £16.4 million.

Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Oliver Mc Mullan, said:

“As a Council we are committed to ensuring residents have value for money, hence we have worked hard to deliver this below inflation District Rate increase of 3.35%.

“During 2026 residents of Causeway Coast and Glens will continue to benefit from Council investment with projects such as the exciting and sustainably built new Ballycastle Leisure Centre nearing completion – an investment of £16.4 million.

“The small rates increase will help ensure services across our Council area continue to be maintained, including frontline operations and continued investment in the services and facilities that matter to our residents.”

The Council stated that these schemes represent only a portion of the wider programme of ongoing and planned investment across Causeway Coast and Glens.
