People interested in becoming firefighters are being invited to apply for a specialist apprenticeship at Belfast City Airport, offering hands-on training, recognised qualifications and the opportunity to build a career in aviation.
Applications are now open for the airport’s High Flyers Apprenticeship Programme, giving successful candidates the chance to train alongside experienced members of its Fire and Rescue Service.
The programme, now in its 12th year, allows apprentices to gain practical experience in an operational airport environment while working towards industry-recognised qualifications.
Building careers in aviation
Since the programme launched in 2014, 20 firefighters have trained through the initiative, with the majority subsequently joining Belfast City Airport’s Fire and Rescue Service.
The scheme has also expanded to include an IT apprenticeship, providing another pathway into employment and specialist training within the aviation sector.
Paddy Hughes, Airport Fire Service Manager at Belfast City Airport, said the programme was helping to develop the next generation of aviation professionals.
“Now in its 12th year, the High Flyers Apprenticeship Programme is all about investing in the future workforce of aviation and fostering an environment where individuals can succeed.
“It plays an important role in building a skilled workforce, creating new pathways for young people to develop specialist, future-focused skills while supporting the airport’s long-term growth.
“Throughout the past number of years, we are privileged to have had 20 talented firefighters through the programme, the majority of which have gone on to become valued members of our Airport Fire and Rescue Service.
“We look forward to welcoming the new intake of apprentices who are ready to take on this unique opportunity."
Apprentices share their experiences
Daniel Fusco, a Trainee Aviation Apprentice Firefighter at Belfast City Airport, said the opportunity to learn directly from experienced colleagues had been particularly valuable.
“The High Flyers Apprenticeship Programme allowed me to work in a real operational environment, learn from senior colleagues and gain industry-recognised qualifications along the way.
“It is an excellent experience, so I would strongly encourage anyone who is interested to apply and take the first step towards a rewarding career.”
High Flyers graduate Aoibh Carroll also highlighted the personal and professional benefits of completing an apprenticeship.
“The encouragement and guidance I received throughout my apprenticeship have helped me grow both professionally and personally.”
“If you’re interested in a role that challenges you and encourages continuous learning and skills development, there’s no better place to start.”
