As Ballymena faces intense media scrutiny this week, one charity has stepped forward to remind the public of the town’s enduring generosity and community spirit.

Christian Aid Ireland has publicly praised the Ballymena Ukulele Group for their recent fundraising efforts, which took place in last month at the Tower Centre.

During the cheerful busking session, the group entertained shoppers with live music, raising almost £350 to support the charity’s work with people living in poverty and crisis around the world.

Though the event itself took place in May, Christian Aid issued a statement this week, highlighting it as a meaningful example of solidarity and compassion in the Co Antrim town.

“With so much attention focused on Ballymena this week, we wanted to remind you of the goodness and generosity of people in the County Antrim town.

“Ballymena Ukulele Group held a busking session recently, giving their time freely to raise funds for Christian Aid’s work to help people living in desperate poverty and crisis around the world.

“These ‘plucky’ and talented musicians entertained shoppers at the town’s Tower Centre mall, who responded with donations totalling almost £350.

“It won’t make it onto the news but Ballymena’s small act of solidarity is a symbol of hope. Hope that we can work together to build a better, fairer world.”

While the headlines this week may paint a more troubled picture of Ballymena, this local effort stands in contrast — a reminder of the kind-hearted actions and quiet generosity that often go unnoticed.

Christian Aid continues its global mission to support vulnerable communities facing conflict, hunger, and climate crises, and efforts like this one from Ballymena play a vital part in that work.
