Antrim’s NI Centenary Stadium celebrates reopening of upgraded athletic track

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Neil Kelly, officially unveiled the newly refurbished 8-lane athletic track at the Northern Ireland Centenary Stadium, part of the Antrim Forum, on Thursday, 29 May.
The event, attended by over 150 local participants, marked a significant milestone for athletics in the Borough, reinforcing its commitment to promoting sport, health, and community wellbeing.
The evening was filled with excitement as primary school pupils and members of running clubs from across Antrim and Newtownabbey competed in a variety of events, including the 100m, 400m, relay, timed mile, and long jump.

The celebrations were elevated by the presence of two distinguished guests: Dr. Michael McKillop MBE, a four-time Paralympic gold medallist and one of Northern Ireland’s most decorated athletes, and Oliver Gunning, a Commonwealth Para Triathlete.
Their attendance inspired participants and underscored the track’s potential to nurture talent at all levels.

Councillor Neil Kelly, speaking at the unveiling, expressed pride in the achievement:

“Reopening this historic track is a proud moment — made even more special by the presence of inspirational athletes like Dr. Michael McKillop and Oliver Gunning. Thank you to all the local running clubs who took part in tonight’s celebrations.”
Originally opened in 1979, the Northern Ireland Centenary Stadium has long served as a hub for athletic excellence.
