A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for Northern Ireland, with icy conditions expected to develop overnight on Friday and into Saturday morning.

The warning is in force from 5pm on Friday 9 January until 11am on Saturday 10 January, covering much of the region during a period when temperatures are forecast to drop sharply below freezing.

Forecasters say clear spells on Friday evening and overnight will allow temperatures to fall quickly, leading to the formation of icy patches, particularly on untreated roads, pavements and rural routes. Motorists and pedestrians are being advised to take extra care, especially during early morning travel.

A scattering of wintry showers is also expected overnight, with precipitation falling as snow over higher ground. Hills above 200 metres could see further small accumulations of between 1cm and 3cm in a few places, increasing the risk of difficult driving conditions on upland routes.

While widespread disruption is not currently expected, the warning highlights the potential for hazardous conditions to develop suddenly, particularly in rural areas and on elevated roads where gritting may be limited.

The overnight freeze could pose challenges for early-morning commuters, delivery drivers and those travelling to work or school on Saturday, with untreated surfaces likely to remain slippery until temperatures rise later in the morning.

Weather officials are urging people to allow extra time for journeys, check local conditions before travelling and take care when walking on icy surfaces.
