A van has been seized in Ballycastle after police discovered it was displaying false registration plates belonging to another, identical vehicle owned by the same person.

The PSNI said Maydown Road Policing Interceptors stopped the van while carrying out patrols in the area. Checks revealed the registration being displayed belonged to an identical van which was fully legal.

Two vans using one registration

According to police, both vehicles were owned by the same person, meaning two vans were effectively being operated using a single registration.

Police said the vehicle that was stopped did not meet requirements for road tax, a Goods Vehicle Test Certificate or a valid insurance policy and was subsequently seized.

The PSNI said:

“Checks such as these are routinely carried out by our officers, so if you need to operate two vehicles, make sure both are fully legal and roadworthy.

“Don’t cut corners. What may seem like a way to save money can ultimately result in enforcement action and a pending court appearance.”

Routine checks uncover offences

The incident serves as a reminder that vehicles operated on public roads must individually meet the relevant legal requirements, with police warning motorists that attempts to avoid those obligations can ultimately lead to enforcement action.
