Tributes paid to Dr Elma Lutton, longest-serving Principal of Cambridge House Grammar School

Former Principal of Cambridge House Grammar School, Dr Dorothy Elma Lutton
Cambridge House Grammar School has paid heartfelt tribute to its longest-serving former Principal, Dr Dorothy Elma Lutton, who passed away peacefully on 12 August 2025.
Dr Lutton, who dedicated more than four decades to the Ballymena school, was described as leaving “an indelible mark” on the community. Her tenure saw the school flourish both academically and pastorally, with pupils, staff and parents remembering her as an inspirational and compassionate leader.
A statement from the school said:
“Elma dedicated over four decades to our school and her legacy is etched in the hearts and minds of every pupil, teacher and parent/guardian who had the privilege of knowing her.
“Under her stewardship the school flourished academically and became a nurturing, inclusive and inspiring environment, demonstrating her passion, purpose and unwavering belief in the potential of every child and member of staff.”

Known for her commitment to the holistic development of pupils, Dr Lutton “was never too busy to offer a kind word, a wise piece of advice or a helping hand”. Her leadership was praised for balancing tradition with progress, and for her integrity and compassion.
“Whilst holding high standards, she led with compassion and never lost sight of what mattered most – the children,” the tribute continued.
“Her influence will be felt for generations, not just in the achievements of our school, but in the countless lives she touched and inspired. Her spirit remains deeply woven into the fabric of our school community.
“Elma, thank you for your vision, your courage, your wisdom and above all your unwavering devotion; we will always be better for having walked the journey with you.”
The school extended its condolences to Dr Lutton’s husband Jim, daughters Christina and Rebecca, sons-in-law Simon and Christopher, grandchildren Emilia, Sebastian, Phoebe and Matilda, her brother Ian, and the wider family circle.
Funeral arrangements
A Service of Celebration for Dr Lutton’s life will take place on Monday 18 August at 11.00am in Gracehill Moravian Church, 25 Church Road, Gracehill, BT42 2NL, followed by a private cremation.

In a notice, her family said she would be “sadly missed and lovingly remembered” and added:
“God has you in His keeping, we have you in our hearts.”
