Translink warns Fleadh finale services will be ‘extremely busy’ after one million journeys

More than one million passenger journeys have been made across Northern Ireland’s public transport network during the first five days of the Fleadh, as Translink prepares for another surge in demand for the festival’s final weekend in Belfast.

The operator says the figure represents around 275,000 additional passenger journeys compared with the equivalent period last year, highlighting the extraordinary impact of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann on bus and rail travel.

With the festival running until Sunday, 9 August, Translink is now warning passengers that services are expected to be “extremely busy” at peak times over the finale weekend and that some people may have to wait for additional services if buses or trains reach capacity. The Fleadh is being held in Belfast for the first time and organisers have previously said more than 800,000 visitors are expected over its eight days.

Extra buses, trains and late-night services

A special Fleadh timetable is in operation, with significantly increased capacity across the bus and rail network alongside additional and late-night services.

Translink is urging anyone travelling into Belfast to plan ahead, allow extra time and check their journey on the day, rather than relying on their usual timetable.

The operator said:

“Demand is expected to remain exceptionally high throughout the finale weekend and customers are encouraged to plan ahead, check journey information before travelling, allow extra time for their journey and arrive early for services where possible.”

Teams will monitor passenger numbers throughout the weekend and respond with additional capacity where operationally possible.

However, Translink has cautioned that the sheer numbers expected to travel mean it may not always be possible to board the first available service.

It added:

“Services are expected to be extremely busy at peak times and, where vehicles reach capacity, customers may occasionally need to wait for planned relief services to arrive.”

Staff and event stewards will be on hand to help manage passenger movements and assist people travelling to and from the festival.

Three official Park & Ride sites

Visitors driving towards Belfast also have the option of using three official Fleadh Park & Ride locations, with regular shuttle buses connecting the sites with the city centre.

The three sites are Eikon Exhibition Centre near the M1, Giant’s Park near the M2 and Belfast Harbour near the M3. Eikon and Belfast Harbour offer single and multi-day parking, while Giant’s Park is for single-day parking.

Translink says public transport remains the best option for reaching the Fleadh, particularly as the festival enters what is traditionally its busiest period.

Passengers travelling from Ballymena and across County Antrim should check their individual bus or rail journey before setting off, particularly for return journeys later in the evening.
