Translink has announced a new three-year strategic partnership with social enterprise NOW Group, reaffirming the public transport operator’s commitment to accessibility, equality, and inclusion for all passengers — particularly those with invisible disabilities.
The collaboration will build upon a longstanding relationship between the two organisations, which began in 2013 with the launch and promotion of the JAM (Just A Minute) Card — a discreet communication aid that allows users to signal that they may need a little more time, understanding, or patience when accessing services.
To date, the initiative has seen widespread success, with over 190,000 people now signed up to use the JAM Card across Northern Ireland and beyond.
Raising awareness and creating inclusive opportunities

The new partnership aims to further embed JAM Card awareness within Translink’s operations and public engagement. A key element of the programme includes comprehensive JAM Card training certification for Translink staff, ensuring that employees are equipped to recognise and respond to communication barriers effectively.
Importantly, the collaboration will also see the development of a new Job Academy, offering tailored work placements within Translink for NOW Group participants. These placements will provide vital hands-on experience and skills to support individuals with additional needs on their employment journeys.
‘Committed to equality and inclusion’
Speaking about the launch, Jacqui Kennedy, Chief People & Corporate Services Officer at Translink, said:
“We’re committed to ensuring our services and facilities are accessible to everyone and this enhanced partnership with The NOW Group reflects our strong customer focus and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
“Over the years, The JAM Card has been an essential tool for so many of our passengers, helping them enjoy greater independence and keeping people better connected. We look forward to continuing our journey with The NOW Group & building on the partnership by encouraging more people to use the JAM Card when using public transport.

“By providing colleagues with bespoke training, we are equipping our staff with the skills to recognise and address communication barriers, ensuring a more inclusive and welcoming experience for customers. We are also looking forward to creating valuable workplace placement opportunities for NOW Group participants.”
‘Inclusive transport and workplaces change lives’
Maeve Monaghan, CEO of the NOW Group, welcomed the expansion of the partnership:
“We’ve built such a strong relationship with Translink over the years, and they’ve been instrumental in helping the JAM Card initiative grow. It’s been incredible to see the difference being a JAM Card friendly business makes, giving customers who need a little more time or understanding the confidence to travel with ease and dignity.
“Now, as we look to the future with plans for a Job Academy, we’re excited to open up meaningful employment opportunities within Translink for NOW Group participants. Inclusive transport and inclusive workplaces really do change lives, and we’re so proud to embark on this strategic partnership as we work together to make journeys and futures even more welcoming for everyone.”
‘It takes the stress out of travelling’

Regular Translink passenger Louise McBride, a JAM Card user, shared her personal experience:
“The JAM Card takes the stress out of travelling. I don’t have to explain myself or feel rushed because the staff already understand. It’s such a relief and makes using the bus or train so much easier.”
