Over 60 free activities to reconnect people with nature and promote mental wellbeing

The Healthy Oceans Healthy Minds campaign is back this August with a bumper programme of more than 60 free community and public events across Mid and East Antrim, encouraging residents to explore, enjoy, and protect Northern Ireland’s stunning blue spaces.

Now in its fifth year, the campaign is led by Live Here Love Here and supported by Belfast Harbour. It aims to promote both environmental awareness and mental well-being through accessible, inclusive events along the coast and inland waterways.

From nature-led beach play and rockpool safaris to birdwatching and historical walks, the activities are designed to engage all age groups, promote mental health, and raise awareness of the environmental threats facing our oceans and rivers – especially the growing issue of marine litter.

“Healthy Oceans Healthy Minds has become a cornerstone of our work. This campaign not only raises awareness about marine pollution but also provides opportunities for people to reconnect with nature and each other,” said Lynda Surgenor, Live Here Love Here Manager.

“We’re especially proud of the inclusive events this year, which ensure that everyone - regardless of ability, age, or background - can enjoy and protect our blue spaces.”

  • The Gobbins Coastal Walk (9 August, 11am): A guided exploration led by Ramble with Robert, combining coastal scenery with local history, storytelling, and plenty of craic.

Inclusive & sustainable engagement

This year’s campaign has placed a strong emphasis on accessibility, with events designed to cater for all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Businesses, schools, charities and individuals across Northern Ireland are encouraged to get involved.

Jenni Barkley, Community Engagement Manager at Belfast Harbour, said:

“We are delighted to continue our sponsorship of this campaign. Healthy Oceans Healthy Minds aligns with our long-term goals to promote sustainability and community well-being.

“These events provide meaningful ways for people to experience the coastline while fostering stewardship and environmental responsibility.”

Healthy Oceans Healthy Minds is delivered by Live Here Love Here, a partnership initiative managed by Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful and funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, ten local councils and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.
