Nineteen residents from Mid and East Antrim have turned practical ambition into real achievement, celebrating the completion of an intensive DIY training programme with a showcase event at Larne Town Hall.

Custom-built tables and bespoke lamps—designed and crafted entirely by participants—took centre stage as certificates were awarded, marking the culmination of the Mid and East Antrim (MEA) DIY Bootcamps.

From beginners to confident makers

Delivered by Building It Better NI in partnership with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, the 12-week programme set out to do more than teach basic home improvement—it aimed to build confidence, independence, and real-world skills.

Participants attended weekly sessions in Carnlough and Carrickfergus, gaining hands-on experience across a wide range of practical disciplines. From safely using power tools to mastering carpentry, tiling, wall panelling, and painting and decorating, the course provided a comprehensive foundation in essential DIY skills.

The transformation was clear. By the end of the programme, participants were not only capable of tackling home repairs but also producing high-quality, functional furniture with professional finishes.

Skills, qualifications and confidence

Alongside practical training, participants achieved recognised qualifications, including an OCN Level 2 in Vocational Skills and an OCN Level 1 in Numeracy.

But the impact extended beyond certificates. The programme also supported the development of communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills—key attributes that strengthen both personal confidence and employability.

The course was carefully designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, giving participants the opportunity to design, measure, and build their own projects from scratch.

A showcase of craftsmanship

The final event in Larne highlighted the high standard achieved by the group, with finished pieces reflecting strong technical ability and attention to detail.

For many, the programme marked a turning point—transforming uncertainty into capability and providing practical skills that can be used for years to come.

Looking ahead

With strong outcomes from this cohort, further opportunities are expected for residents interested in developing similar skills in the future.
