With The 153rd Open Championship in full swing, the public is being reminded of strict airspace restrictions in place throughout the prestigious golf event. An air exclusion zone, including a ban on drones, is active daily from 4:30am to 9:00pm until Sunday, 21 July (inclusive).

The exclusion zone is a safety measure to ensure the smooth and secure operation of the championship, which is drawing tens of thousands of visitors to the town of Portrush.

“We have already made contact with clubs, associations and societies that we are aware of, who would regularly utilise airspace to ensure they abide by these restrictions,” said organisers.

Authorities are urging the public to take the restriction seriously. “It’s also worth noting, if you are detected breaching this order and end up with a criminal record, your travel and career prospects will be negatively affected,” they warned.

Safety reminder for road users amid wet weather

In addition to the airspace advisory, a warning has been issued to road users travelling to Portrush. Following heavy rainfall this morning and more expected later today, conditions on the roads have become particularly hazardous.

“If you are travelling to The Open today, please take extra care on the roads, as road surfaces are very slippery due to excess water,” the statement continues.

Motorists are urged to:

  • Reduce speed in wet conditions

  • Allow extra space for vulnerable road users like cyclists and motorcyclists

  • Avoid overtaking unless it is completely safe to do so

Public transport options encouraged

Attendees are also encouraged to use public transport provided by Translink, with regular bus and rail services running throughout the championship. “Remember to take your time and exercise caution. We want everyone to arrive here safely to enjoy their day,” organisers said.

Summary

As The 153rd Open Championship brings global attention to Portrush, authorities are prioritising public safety—on the ground and in the air. The public is strongly advised to respect drone and airspace restrictions and take care on the roads amid rainy conditions.
