The Police Service of Northern Ireland has acknowledged the sentencing of 38-year-old Thomas Scott, from Belfast, who has been jailed for a series of violent domestic abuse offences described as “terrifying” by investigating officers.

Scott appeared at Belfast Crown Court on Thursday 4 December, where he received a three-year and four-month sentence, with half to be served on licence, for non-fatal strangulation aggravated by domestic abuse and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

‘Sustained attacks’ across three nights

According to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), officers were alerted on 25 February 2024, when the victim phoned police reporting she had been subjected to three consecutive nights of abuse.

Detective Sergeant McCune detailed the level of violence inflicted on the woman, saying:

“On 25th February 2024 we received a call from the victim in this case reporting that she had been abused by Scott for three nights in a row.

“In one sustained attack, he threw her onto the bed, she rolled onto the floor and he then got on top of her and put a knee on her stomach and a knee on her throat. She couldn’t breathe. Once she managed to get up, he threw her head-first into a mirror on the wall. He then threw her from the top of the stairs to the bottom.

“During the final attack, she was able to flee from Scott but he followed, shouting abuse at her on the street. He then attempted to strangle her again but she was able to scream for help and he left.”

Police said the victim continues to suffer trauma as a result of the repeated assaults.

‘She fought for justice’

Detective Sergeant McCune praised the woman’s courage for coming forward and assisting with the investigation.

“These are terrifying attacks on the victim and she still suffers from the trauma of the events. Scott is a very violent man. I commend the victim’s bravery in coming forward to bring an end to the cycle of abuse. She has pushed through the fear barrier he built around her and fought for justice.”

She added a wider appeal to anyone experiencing domestic abuse:

“Domestic abuse can happen to anyone and it is unacceptable. If you are being subjected to coercive, controlling behaviour or violence, please report it to us or the 24-hour Domestic Violence helpline. We can help you.”

The PSNI continues to urge victims and anyone concerned about a loved one to seek support, stressing that police and specialist services are available day and night.
