PSNI launch road safety operation across Ballymena with motorists urged to ‘play your part’

Motorists across Ballymena have been reminded to drive safely after police launch a series of road safety enforcement activities across the district as part of Operation Lifesaver.

Officers from the PSNI’s D Section were on patrol throughout the weekend, carrying out vehicle checkpoints, roadside breath tests, speed checks and inspections of vehicle condition as part of the ongoing initiative to improve road safety across Northern Ireland.

Police said the majority of drivers they stopped were complying with the law, but highlighted one vehicle that was seized after officers established it was being driven without insurance.

The vehicle was stopped on Henry Street in the Harryville area of Ballymena and was later recovered by police.

Wide-ranging enforcement

In a statement, the PSNI said:

“As we continue with road safety operations across Northern Ireland this week, officers from D Section Ballymena have been conducting patrols across the district this weekend, with particular focus being afforded to our roads, as part of Op Lifesaver.

“Officers have been conducting vehicle check points, requesting breath tests from road users, conducting speed checks and checking the conditions of vehicles to ensure that our roads remain safe for all.

“Whilst we are pleased to report that the majority of road users we engaged with have been abiding by the law, the below is a vehicle that was stopped by officers, confirmed to have no insurance and has subsequently been seized.”

Police used the uninsured vehicle as one example of the work carried out during the operation, while reminding motorists that enforcement will continue.

Keeping roads safe

The PSNI is urging all road users to play their part in reducing the risk of serious collisions by following the rules of the road.

The spokesperson added:

“Please play your part in helping keep our roads safe for everyone – slow down, never drink or drug drive, always wear your seatbelt, don’t get distracted.”

Driving without insurance is an offence in Northern Ireland and can result in a vehicle being seized, along with penalty points, fines and possible prosecution.

Operation Lifesaver continues to see officers carrying out proactive road safety enforcement across Northern Ireland, targeting dangerous and illegal driving while encouraging motorists to make safe decisions behind the wheel.
