Portaferry hit-and-run: Man charged after boy on scooter dies following collision

A man has been charged following a fatal hit-and-run road traffic collision in Portaferry, County Down, which claimed the life of a young boy earlier this week.
The incident occurred in the Strand area shortly after 11pm on Tuesday, 8th July, when a red Skoda Fabia collided with a scooter ridden by the child. The boy was taken to hospital but sadly died from his injuries.
Detectives investigating the case have now charged a 51-year-old man with causing death by dangerous driving, along with other driving-related offences.
He is due to appear before Newtownards Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 11th July.
In line with standard procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision. Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives at the Collision Investigation Unit via 101, quoting reference 1788 of 08/07/25.
