A man has sadly died following a road traffic collision in Newtownards, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has confirmed.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 29th June, shortly after 1.15pm, on Portaferry Road, and involved a single vehicle — a motorcycle.
The deceased has been formally identified as Philip McClelland, aged 36, who was from the Newtownards area.
In a statement released by the Police Service’s Collision Investigation Unit, Inspector Cherith Adair said:
“Shortly before 1.15pm, we received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision involving a motorcycle. The rider of the motorcycle sadly died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained.”
Emergency services responded promptly to the incident, but tragically, Mr McClelland was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Portaferry Road was temporarily closed to allow for investigative and recovery work but has since been reopened to traffic.
Police investigations are ongoing. Inspector Adair continued:
“Enquiries are continuing and anyone who witnessed the collision or with dashcam or other footage which could assist with our investigation is asked to contact Collision Investigation Unit detectives via 101, quoting reference number 762 29/06/25.”
Authorities are appealing to the public, particularly any drivers or residents who may have relevant dashcam footage or eyewitness information, to assist in establishing the full circumstances of the incident.
