Wrightbus welcomed 47 new apprentices to the Ballymena manufacturing facility.

World-leading bus manufacturer Wrightbus has welcomed 47 new apprentices to its Ballymena headquarters, marking a significant investment in the next generation of skilled coachbuilders.

The new recruits have embarked on a four-year apprenticeship programme, combining academic study with practical on-the-job training. They are studying at the Northern Regional College in Ballymena and Transport Training Services in Crumlin, while gaining hands-on experience at Wrightbus.

The apprenticeships cover a wide range of specialisms, including Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering, Fabrication & Welding, Auto-Electrical & Mobile Electrical Principles, and Vehicle Accident Repair Paint Principles.

Wrightbus CEO Jean-Marc Gales praised the value of apprentices within the company.

“Apprentices are an incredible asset for our company. Each and every one of them brings a fresh enthusiasm to the factory, with invaluable ways of thinking which help us all grow and develop new ideas, processes, solutions and products,” he said.

Mr Gales highlighted the firm’s expansion across the UK, Ireland, and Europe, noting that apprentices already play a vital role in supporting its growth.

“Over the last few years Wrightbus has continued to expand in the UK, the island of Ireland and across Europe.

“Our apprentices already make a valuable contribution to our work and now we have excellent opportunities for more candidates who are ready to kick start their careers while gaining recognised qualifications, invaluable work experience and earning as they learn.”

Awards for Outstanding Apprentices

As part of the welcome event, Wrightbus recognised the achievements of several apprentices who had excelled during their time at the factory.

  • Year 1 Apprentice of the Year: Ben Smyth (Coachbuilder) – praised for his positive attitude, willingness to learn and strong work ethic.

  • Year 2 Apprentice of the Year: Josh Davidson (Spraypainter) – commended for his consistent excellence, integrity, and teamwork.

  • Year 3 Apprentice of the Year: Adam McLaughlin (Coachbuilder) – recognised for his reliability, determination, and commitment to quality.

In addition, five employees successfully completed their Level 3 Apprenticeships:

  • Tyler Flynn (Electrical) – Level 3 Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering

  • Craig Brown (Electrical) – Level 3 Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering

  • Mangirdas Trumpis (Electrical) – Level 3 Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering

  • Jack Walker (Spraypaint) – Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Accident Repair Paint Competence & Principles

  • Nathan Lawrence (Coachbuilder) – Level 3 Diploma in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering

Encouraging young talent

Mr Gales urged more young people to consider the apprenticeship programme as a pathway into a rewarding career.

“The apprenticeship programmes on offer provide the opportunity to earn as you learn, gain recognised qualifications, and begin a career journey where the sky’s the limit,” he said.

“At Wrightbus, we are passionate about the importance of green skills and green technology and about championing and encouraging apprentices every step of the way.”

The investment in apprenticeships comes as Wrightbus continues to strengthen its reputation as a pioneer in green transport technologies, including zero-emission hydrogen and electric buses.
