The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for Northern Ireland as the region braces for heavy rain and thunderstorms from Sunday 20 July to Monday 21 July 2025.

A yellow warning for rain has been issued covering County Antrim, County Armagh and County Down.

The alert is in place from 18:00 on Sunday 20 July until 18:00 on Monday 21 July. According to the Met Office, “heavy rain may cause some flooding and disruption during Sunday night and Monday.”

Forecasters say a band of rain will develop and become increasingly heavy and persistent, especially across eastern and southeastern parts of Northern Ireland.

While there remains uncertainty over the exact positioning of the rain band, areas affected could see between 50 and 75 millimetres of rainfall within just 12 to 18 hours.

Separately, a yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued for Counties Fermanagh, Londonderry, and Tyrone, in effect from 12:00 to 20:00 on Sunday 20 July.

The Met Office advises: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms may lead to some flooding and disruption in places.”

Rainfall could be intense and localised, with 20 to 40 millimetres possible in just a few hours. Alongside the downpours, residents should be aware of potential lightning strikes and hail, adding to the hazardous conditions.

What to expect

  • Possible travel delays and difficult driving conditions

  • Localised flooding of homes, roads, and businesses

  • Disruption to outdoor events and activities

  • Risk of power cuts and lightning-related damage

Motorists and event organisers are advised to check for updates and plan accordingly.
