Lidl Northern Ireland has announced a second major pay increase for staff in 2026, investing a further £756,000 into wages for frontline workers and Deputy Store Managers across its Northern Ireland operations.

The latest increase, which came into effect on 1 May, will see hourly-paid colleagues earn at least £13.30 per hour — comfortably above the UK National Living Wage of £12.71 — while Deputy Store Managers will also receive enhanced pay rates.

The retailer said the move will deliver an average annual take-home pay increase of £480 for hourly-paid employees and £710 for Deputy Store Managers, as pressure from the cost-of-living crisis continues to affect households across Northern Ireland.

Fresh investment follows earlier £2.3 million pay increase

The new pay package builds on a £2.3 million investment announced earlier this year and pushes Lidl Northern Ireland’s total investment in employee pay to more than £11 million since 2022.

The supermarket chain said the latest targeted investment is aimed at maintaining competitive pay levels in some of its most customer-facing and operationally critical roles across its 44 Northern Ireland stores and Regional Distribution Centre at Nutts Corner.

Employees affected by the changes will receive average pay increases of between 2% and 5%, depending on role and position.

The announcement comes at a time when retailers across the UK continue to face mounting pressure around staff retention, recruitment and rising operating costs, with supermarkets increasingly competing on pay and benefits to attract workers.

More than 1,300 employed across Northern Ireland

Lidl Northern Ireland currently employs more than 1,300 people across the region and says it is actively recruiting for more than 150 additional roles across the business.

The retailer said a further 1% investment in its employee benefits package is also planned later this year as part of its ongoing workforce strategy.

Gordon Cruikshanks, Regional Managing Director at Lidl Northern Ireland, said the latest increase reflects the company’s continued focus on rewarding employees working in key operational roles.

He said:

“Earlier this year, we made a significant investment in pay for all colleagues across our Northern Ireland business. This latest increase reflects our continued focus on ensuring our most customer-facing and operational roles remain among the best rewarded in the market.

“At Lidl Northern Ireland, our people are central to everything we do. We are committed to recognising the contribution of our colleagues through competitive pay and industry-leading benefits, while supporting them in their day-to-day lives.

“We know there is more to value than just pay alone — it’s about creating an environment where our colleagues feel supported, can grow their careers, and are recognised for the role they play in delivering for our customers every day.”

Retailer highlights wider benefits package

Alongside pay increases, Lidl Northern Ireland said it continues to provide what it describes as one of the most comprehensive employee benefits packages in the retail sector.

The package includes enhanced family leave, fertility support, wellbeing initiatives and workplace inclusion policies aimed at supporting staff at different stages of life and career development.

The supermarket chain has also been recognised as a Top Employer by the Top Employers Institute for five consecutive years and says it remains the only retailer in Northern Ireland to receive the accreditation.

The latest investment further strengthens Lidl’s position as the highest-paying supermarket retailer in Northern Ireland at a time when rising wages and staff welfare continue to dominate the retail sector agenda.
