Lidl’s first pub in Northern Ireland – ‘The Middle Ale’
A supermarket trip to one Lidl will soon come with the option of sitting down for a pint after the retailer confirmed its first-ever Northern Ireland pub, The Middle Ale, is set to open next month.
The new public house and off-sales at Lidl’s existing Dundonald store in County Down marks a major step into Northern Ireland’s hospitality sector for the discount retailer, with the project bringing more than £500,000 of investment into the local area and creating eight permanent new jobs.
Named “The Middle Ale” in a nod to Lidl’s famous middle aisle bargains, the fully accessible venue has been under construction since April and will operate independently from the adjoining supermarket with its own separate entrance.
The move is likely to spark strong public interest across Northern Ireland, not only because of Lidl’s unusual move into the pub trade, but because it blends supermarket retail with a standalone hospitality concept in a way rarely seen locally.
Eight new jobs created ahead of opening
The project has added eight permanent roles to the Dundonald operation, increasing Lidl’s local workforce beyond its existing team of 27 employees.
New positions include:
• Bar manager
• Bar duty manager
• Bar attendants
• Off-sales attendants
Lidl said the new venue has been designed as a welcoming social space for shoppers and residents, with seating for up to 60 people across a 60 square metre floor area.
The pub and off-sales will each have their own dedicated entrances, separating the hospitality offering from the supermarket itself.
Inside Lidl’s first Northern Ireland pub
The Middle Ale will stock a wide selection of Lidl’s wines, beers and spirits, allowing customers to purchase and consume drinks on-site for the first time in a dedicated pub environment.
Bar snack options will also be available, while the attached off-sales will offer customers the chance to purchase drinks to take home.
Lidl partnered with MMG Contracts and Marcon on the construction and fit-out of the project, while hospitality designer Gordon Devenney of O’Donnell O’Neill was brought in to create the interior concept.
Devenney is known for work on high-profile hospitality venues including The Foundry and Belfast’s Linen Hall Bar.
According to Lidl, the interior design aims to reflect the retailer’s “iconic brand personality” while creating a more immersive hospitality experience than customers would typically associate with a supermarket setting.
Lidl says project is a major local investment
Commenting ahead of the opening, Lidl Northern Ireland Regional Managing Director Gordon Cruikshanks said the retailer believes the concept will offer something new to the wider Belfast hospitality scene.
“We are pleased to confirm that our new public house at Dundonald is nearing completion and will open next month as ‘The Middle Ale’ in homage to our infamous middle aisle which our customers know and love,” he said.
“With a wide selection of premium quality drinks across beers, wines and spirits, we’re excited to bring our full range to customers in a novel new pub setting.”
He added that Lidl had worked with specialist hospitality designers and construction partners to create “a unique offering” for Dundonald.
“With construction nearly complete, we’re looking forward to seeing the response and hearing customers’ feedback on what we believe is an innovative new addition to the thriving hospitality sector in the wider Belfast area, as well as a much-needed investment for the Dundonald community.”
A supermarket first likely to draw attention across Northern Ireland
The announcement is expected to generate significant curiosity among shoppers and hospitality operators alike, with Lidl effectively testing whether its strong retail brand can successfully cross into the traditional pub market.
For Dundonald, the development represents both a fresh hospitality venue and a further sign of continued commercial investment in the area, while also bringing additional employment opportunities at a time when many parts of the hospitality sector continue to face economic pressures.
With construction nearing completion, attention will now turn to how customers respond when The Middle Ale officially opens its doors next month.
