Plans to expand parking at Ballymoney Train Station have moved a step closer after the Minister for Infrastructure confirmed that funding has been allocated to support the project, with North Antrim MLA Jon Burrows welcoming the development.

In a written response to a question from Mr Burrows, the Minister confirmed that the Department for Infrastructure has allocated funding enabling Translink to purchase a site on Meeting House Street, directly adjacent to the station.

Land purchase to address rising commuter demand

The acquisition of the Meeting House Street site is described as a strategic move that will allow for the creation of additional parking spaces at the station.

The expansion is intended to address growing demand from Ballymoney’s expanding population and the increasing number of commuters relying on rail services.

The Minister further outlined that the project team is currently progressing through the feasibility planning phase, with an Outline Business Case expected to follow shortly.

Subject to securing the necessary funding and statutory approvals, the expanded parking facility could be operational by 2030.

Support for commuters and local residents

The proposed expansion is aimed at easing pressure on existing parking capacity and improving access to rail services for residents across Ballymoney and surrounding rural areas.

Improved parking provision is expected to make it easier for passengers to access the railway network, while also helping to reduce congestion in nearby streets.

In response to the announcement, Jon Burrows said:

“I am delighted to hear that significant progress is being made on this long-anticipated project. Good access to the railway network is essential for rural connectivity and regional prosperity.

“Ballymoney has seen a steady increase in both residential growth and commuter traffic, and this expansion will help accommodate those demands. It’s a key part of the wider improvements I hope to see in the Ballymoney area in the coming years.”

The expansion of parking at Ballymoney Train Station is expected to strengthen the town’s transport infrastructure, supporting daily commuters, families travelling for work or education, and visitors accessing rail services across Northern Ireland.
